Custom crisscross slatted ceilings evokes warmth throughout dynamic workspace

Bates Smart uses customised SUPASLAT to achieve welcoming workspace
SUPASLAT custom panels and SUPALINE decorative panels have been used throughout the flexible workspace for Australian Unity in a mix of heritage restoration and new building in Spring Street, Melbourne VIC.
The designers, Bates Smart, were asked to achieve flexible and welcoming workspaces over 3 levels to accommodate over 1000 staff. The brief required the creation of a hub-style workplace with a focus on wellness to connect people in a communal atmosphere while retaining the heritage feel of the building. It was a priority to also address BCA regulations and meet Green requirements with all materials used.
Having worked with SUPAWOOD on many successful projects in the past, Bates Smart called on SUPAWOOD to provide customised slatted and decorative linings for feature ceilings throughout areas of the refurbishment. They were confident in SUPAWOOD’s ability to work closely with all concerned by providing detailed shop drawings and expert guidance throughout the project. This would ensure efficient lead times and a smooth installation keeping withing the restraints of the client’s budget.
SUPASLAT custom slatted panel in profile 1 form a crisscross geometrical pattern to define specific areas of the communal workspaces and meeting rooms. Lighting and other services have been cleverly integrated in the slatted panels and access into the ceiling cavity provided through the inclusion of concealed hatches. The slatted panels have been backed with black integrated acoustic textile to help address noise reverberation.

In other larger areas SUPALINE decorative solid panels frame the perimeters of the slatted panels. SUPALINE has also been used down corridors further provide a welcoming warmth and create a flow from one area to another.
The SUPASLAT and SUPALINE panels have been perfectly matched with a durable finish of SUPAFINISH Tasmanian Oak laminate which is VOC free. The use of this type of finish and an FR MDF substrate ensured that the panels met strict BCA regulations for this type of project. These elements helped to achieve 5 Star Green Star and 5 Star NABERS Energy ratings.
