Buchan chooses highly customised SUPALINE for podium retail ceilings
A highly complex layout of shaped SUPALINE decorative panels create a stunning ceiling effect flowing around Levels 2 and 3 of the podium retail spaces at Castle Towers in Castle Hill NSW.
The designers, Buchan, wanted to achieve a decorative but complex paved effect on the ceilings above the podium thoroughfares around the central atrium of the shopping centre. Part of the design required grooved patterns on timber look panels. This meant finding a lining manufacturer who could help develop the challenging design brief to make it work, manufacture the desired highly customised shaped panels then oversee the installation to completion. Plus… the panels also needed to comply with BCA regulations and fit within the client’s budget.

Having worked with SUPAWOOD previously, the design team were familiar with SUPAWOOD’s unique ability to provide a comprehensive design, supply and install service to turn their dreams into reality. SUPAWOOD were able to provide valuable guidance and complex shop drawings plus supervision throughout the whole process.
Levels 2 and 3 are podiums of mix of retail flowing around a large central atrium which floods the spaces with natural light. Other biophilic design elements are complimented by the design of the ceilings on these podiums.
The panels form a crazy paving design on the ceilings over the thoroughfares on each level. The parts of the ceilings nearer the shop fronts are lined with SUPALINE in a neutral matt SUPACOLOUR finish. However, the areas on the outer edge are slightly raised and in a SUPALINE custom grooved pattern reminiscent of the veins of leaves. These outer areas are finished in a woodgrain laminate.
Raw unfinished backing boards were used as a base under the shaped panels. Lighting and other services have also been integrated in the backing boards between the decorative panels.
To frame the inner perimeter, custom curved MAXI BEAM lightweight beams have been applied. These have been tastefully contrasted with the other finishes in a metallic brushed finish.
On level 3 the finishes are slightly darker than those on level 2 (see below). Throughout, SUPAWOOD were able to advise on alternative durable finishes to fit the required budget.

This project demonstrates how versatile SUPAWOOD products can be and how they can be adapted to achieve the most complex of designs. What has been achieved here is a unique design which provides a welcoming atmosphere, a sense of luxury and enhances the shopping experience to encourage patrons to return again and again.
