JDH Architects’ school hall ceiling features economical MAXI BEAM

SUPAWOOD’s MAXI BEAM has been use extensively for the ceiling of the new Multipurpose Hall at Chevalier College in Burradoo NSW.

The designers, JDH Architects, wanted to create a vibrant look with chunky timber beams running the length of the expansive ceiling. To meet the design intent as well as the product weight, fire retardancy and acoustic requirements within budget, solid timber was not an option. Instead, an alternative budget friendly solution was sought.

MAXI BEAM lightweight fire rated beams were the obvious choice to address all the project requirements.

The Multipurpose Hall incorporates a games court and retractable seating to accommodate 700 attendees for school assemblies.

The ceiling beams run the full length of the hall intersected by the main supporting metal roof trusses. Strip lighting has been placed between the beams.  To address noise reverberation, 7mm black SUPABAB acoustic backing board lines the entire surface above the beams and helps to highlight the warm effect of the timber.

Approximately 2700 lineal meters of 150 x 50mm beams have been used throughout and supplied pre-cut to the required lengths. The beams are Fire Group 1 and finished in a VOC free SUPAFINISH Tasmanian Oak laminate. This compliments the sprung timber floor below.

In addition to the MAXI BEAM ceiling, SUPACOUSTIC acoustic panels in a SP1 perforation pattern have been applied along the wall between the lower doors and upper louvered windows to further eliminate noise echo. To add more timber to the interior and to match the beams perfectly, these have also been finished in SUPAFINISH Tasmanian Oak laminate.

This is an exceptional example of how lightweight MAXI BEAM can reduce the structural costs in a new build and simplify installation in a high space. The products used in this project are all part of the SUPAWOOD Budget Saving Range.
