Budget restraints overcome by using alternative linings

The Dubbo Regional Theatre and the extension of the convention centre, a facility of the Dubbo Regional Council, utilises both solid and acoustic panel lining options from the SUPAWOOD product range.

Some of the lining finishes in the initial design challenged the budget and presented unrealistic lead times, poor colour matching and other technical aspects. Alternative linings that could meet the design intent and accommodate these restraints needed to be sourced. SUPAWOOD provided advice on finishes and options to overcome these hurdles.

Opened in April 2010, the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre has become an important part of the cultural fabric of the Dubbo region.

The theatre’s foyer features two rows of suspended SUPALINE decorative panels in SUPAFINISH Hoop Pine concept veneer set in matching upstands and integrated with scattered lighting. Hoop Pine panels also feature on the walls up the stairs leading to the theatres entry level.

SUPALINE solid and SUPACOUSTIC slotted acoustic panels in three shades of gloss SUPACOLOUR red form strong accent feature walls to mark the entry points into the theatre. These have been set against Black SUPAFINISH on plywood panels. The red also lines walls along passageways in other areas.

The Joyce Schneider Auditorium, a 500 seat state-of-the art theatre, has been acoustically designed. Staggered SUPALINE Hoop Pine form a dominant feature on the side walls and are illuminated by lighting. These have been positioned to achieve reflective acoustics. Black plywood panels are used around and below these panels.

SUPAWOOD provided shop-drawing and project management services throughout this project. They recommended concept veneer Hoop Pine on MDF as a durable alternative to Hoop Pine plywood and resolved matching problems. Plywood panels finished in SUPAFINISH Black achieved a successful alternative to Black Japan finish on plywood. These recommendations also achieved shorter lead times and proved very cost effective.
