Bates Smart’s challenging refurbishment of hotel restaurant

SUPAWOOD’s slatted panels have been used extensively in the refurbishment of the Pier St. Grill, an intimate restaurant positioned just off the lobby of the Novotel Sydney Darling Square hotel in Darling Harbour, NSW.

Bates Smart, working with a modest budget, sought products that were easy to specify and install as the work was to be performed in a live environment. They also wanted to achieve a refreshing contemporary look that was functional and reflected the maritime theme of the hotel’s location.

SUPASLAT slatted prefinished panels provided the flexibility, clean install and look the designers wanted for the restaurant columns and walls.

Located in the heart of Darling Harbour, the Novotel Sydney Darling Square Hotel is a popular mid-sized hotel for a cross-section of travellers. The aim of the renovation was to create a fresh contemporary look, feel and functionality for the ground level bar, all-day dining and reception while maintaining the Novotel brand in order to broaden the hotel’s appeal to a wider market.

MAKE YOUR MARK

See your project vision come to life!

In the restaurant, SUPAWOOD’S slatted wall panels have been used to overclad existing balustrading, columns and double height walls. The prefinished slatted panels were supplied to size as specified and curvable for forming around columns and walls, enabling installation to be quick and economical with no onsite cutting or mess.

The wall panels in SUPAWOOD’s profile 2 slat configuration are finished in SUPAFINISH laminate in White. The palette chosen for the panels and other fittings enhances the low-level lighting, creating a welcoming space. Not only do the slatted panels add texture to the interior, but they also complement the local maritime atmosphere.

In addition, a white acoustic textile instead of the usual black has been integrated into the panelling creating a more even and subtle appearance while maintaining the panels’ acoustic qualities.

This project shows how a simple use of SUPAWOOD slatted products over existing old work can lift and enhance an interior, bringing it into the modern day even while working on a tight budget.
