Australia’s 1st green public building enriched by decorative acoustic tiled ceilings

SUPAWOOD’S SUPATILE 10 acoustic timber ceiling tiles have been used extensively throughout the public areas of Australia’s first government project to achieve a 5 star Green Star Public Building rating.

Designed by PDT Architects, The Corso at North Lakes in Queensland sets a new benchmark for sustainable public buildings. Not only has the functionality of the building energy footprint been addressed in the design, where possible materials used throughout, including SUPATILE 10, were chosen to meet strict Green Star ratings.

SUPATILE 10 ceiling tiles are made from sustainable and low formaldehyde timber and VOC free finishes. The tiles were also supplied in a fire retardant option to meet BCA requirements.

This is a significant project for the local community comprising of a state-of-the-art library, community centre and office complex. Incorporated in the design of the library and entry areas are expansive high ceilings which posed noise reverberation problems. This necessitated the need for an acoustic ceiling lining that was green and would improve acoustics but over such a vast area it was also important to add aesthetics. Another important aspect to consider was the ceiling lining had to provide easy accessibility into the roof. The lining used had to be fully removable without the use of large joints. SUPATILE 10 met all these demands.

Through consultation with SUPAWOOD, for the library the designers chose SUPATILE 10 tiles finished in durable SUPAFINISH Hoop Pine concept veneer in Angle pattern and have achieved the look of a timber mosaic. In the entry the same finish has been used but for the smaller area the Angle pattern tiles are intermingled with solid ones.

This project utilises all the qualities that SUPATILE 10 acoustic ceiling tiles offer. An eye catching ceiling has been created which adds immense warmth to the building interior and also provides the answer to technical and green requirements.
