Execution Phase Part 3: Factory Expertise

An important element of the execution phase is the area of SUPAWOOD’s factory capabilities which combines factory knowledge, practical expertise and state-of-the-art machinery to convert the clients wildest dream effortlessly and skillfully into reality.

With the recent integration of a brand new 5 axis CNC machine in the factory, we are now able to take on and successfully complete much more complex customized lining projects.

The Jewel Phase 3 Hotel project was particularly challenging in that it called for a detailed design using our SUPASLAT product. The brief was a slatted feature panel system that featured a mountain range shape across the ceilings.

With slats running in multiple directions and levels in the design making joints match up required compound miters. Fortunately, these were made relatively simple by using our new 5-axis CNC machine.

Multiple slats at different directions and levels with differing compound mitered angles would have been achievable without this machine, however, the levels of accuracy would have been far inferior and lead times would have been extended - blowing out costs.

The Jewel Phase 3 Hotel Project design

As mentioned earlier, SUPAWOOD’s ability to take on more complex and custom lining projects has increased now we have this new machinery. As a result of this, projects can now be easily delivered defect free and much faster with no rework required in the factory or onsite.

The quality and accuracy we can produce with the new CNC machine also plays to the advantage of our team as it can be easily operated by all of our skilled factory people without them needing to be highly trained joiners.

By being able to produce our products more accurately, those responsible for the installation onsite can easily follow the directions with little to no cutting work required.

In regard of the way this accuracy is achieved, with the drawing software we use, we can create DXF files that align exactly to the shop drawings for the product which the client has signed off on. These DXF files are then loaded into the CNC software for the machine and are perfectly replicated to result in a 100% guarantee to the client that they will receive what they signed off on with the drawings.

Another complex project SUPAWOOD has recently been involved in was the Penrith Civic Centre project. The design of this project called for curved beams, hence requiring a fixing system to be designed by the execution team. Because of our previous experience with projects like this, we were able to take fixings that have worked in the past and use our knowledge to understand which would be the best solution for this particular installation. A curved fixing cleat was determined to be the best solution. This was not only chosen as the most stable way to fix the beams, but the most achievable and economical way our factory staff could replicate it multiple times for the quantity of beams needed.

This application of factory expertise considers that, while all factory workers are highly skilled, concepts and processes are implemented so tasks can be carried out by all in the factory.

Our qualified joiner, Richard Hines, says that ‘knowing how a material behaves and how far you can bend it’, as well as the limitations and benefits with using a product in a certain way, has certainly contributed to the success of this project. This expertise allowed us to create options and therefore solutions for processes that are specifically tailored to the project in terms of outcomes and maximizing quality.

In summary, complete factory expert capabilities from preparation for production with the project management team, and then throughout production with our highly skilled factory team, is a vital part of the SUPAWOOD execution phase. Our team has a  complete awareness of our product, the processes required to create a design and the ability to carry this through from concept to completion smoothly. This greatly contributes to the high quality, market leading projects we deliver.
