Jacobs achieve welcoming atmosphere in award winning hospital atrium.

SUPAWOOD acoustic timber panels form a major feature on the expansive ceiling of the central atrium in the multi-award winning Clinical Services Building at Blacktown Hospital in NSW.

The designers, Jacobs Engineering Group, sought materials for the interior which would not only achieve the warm welcoming atmosphere they envisioned, but also address acoustics and environmental as well as BCA regulations within the required budget..

SUPAWOOD’s SUPACOUSTIC acoustic timber panels were chosen as they were an economical solution to perfectly meet all essential criteria.

A central light-filled internal atrium forms seamless connection between the old and new hospital buildings which is reminiscent of a mall complete with retail outlets, cafes and the entry points leading into clinical service areas. This design humanises the entry into the hospital while cleverly directing patients and visitors quickly and easily to their destinations

The design of the atrium is expansive both in height and in length which makes noise reverberation a major consideration. This has been successfully achieved by lining the vast area of the ceiling with SUPACOUSTIC slotted panels. This product is acoustically tried and tested, an economical means of lining such a vast ceiling area and aesthetically pleasing.

A finish of Tasmanian Oak SUPAFINISH concept veneer enhances the atmosphere in the space by introducing the warmth of timber. This finish is extremely durable, impact resistant, and has zero VOC emissions. The panels have been supplied with a fire retardant MDF substrate and where needed have been shaped to allow for services and columns.

The Blacktown Hospital’s clinical services building has set a new benchmark in hospital development in Australia and now has a total of 26 nominations and 12 awards. These included 3 awards from the International Academy of Design and Health awards.
