AMC Architects chose fire compliant acoustic panels for a Canberra landmark

SUPACOUSTIC perforated panels have been used extensively in the refurbishment of Canberra’s National Capital Exhibition Centre (NCE), a greatly visited iconic landmark at Regatta Park on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra ACT.

The designers, AMC Architects, wanted a ceiling lining product that would provide longevity and aesthetically reflect the feel of the Canberra area while also addressing acoustics and meeting stringent BCA regulations. As the refurbishment of the building had to work to a tight timeframe, choosing a locally manufactured product would ensure that short lead times could be achieved. SUPAWOOD acoustic linings met all these requirements.

The NCE centre tells the ‘Story of Canberra’ as the capital city of Australia through audio and visual displays and, is a must-see educational venue for visitors. Around the south side of the building is a glazed gallery from which extensive views across Lake Burley Griffin to Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle precinct can be enjoyed.

In this gallery and display alcoves leading into the centre of the building, noise reverberation needed to be addressed. Good clear audio is a must for the guides as they show school children and other visitors around the displays. The problem has been solved by installing an acoustic ceiling of SUPACOUSTIC perforated panels throughout these areas.

Further to enhance the aesthetics and blend with other elements used, a finish of SUPAFINISH Spotted Gum laminate has been chosen. The SUPAFINISH laminate finish is also Low VOC and extremely durable. To meet stringent BCA requirements, the panels were supplied in a FR MDF substrate option.

In this project the Spotted Gum timber of the acoustic panels against the backdrop of the lake provoke a strong Australian theme. This compliments the building’s use perfectly while successfully addressing acoustics and the required building regulations.

This is what the installer said…
'The main things that are great when working with Supawood are the constant updates and communication provided throughout the procurement process. Plus, the product also doesn’t disappoint, with high quality workmanship a constant.'
