Macquarie University Informal Room, Macquarie Park NSW

Striking feature achieved with product customisation

For a striking feature ceiling in the Macquarie University Informal Learning & Teaching building, the SUPAWOOD MAXI Beam was customized and designed to create a geometric, hexagonal like pattern. The lightweight beams, finished in the Light Tas Oak SUPALAMI laminate finish, offered an alternate solution to heavy solid timber beams, helping the designer and installer achieve the elegance of the natural wood aesthetic without the challenges of working with solid timber.

On top of the lightweight benefits offered, the MAXI Beams can diffuse sound, improving the room’s acoustics – an area that is particularly important in education spaces where there are many people in a room at one time.

With the design, beams were supplied as pre-cut and mitered beams with a custom ‘star’ fixing to sit above. This ensured that all beams met equally and sat snug at the joints.
